9th International Pharos  Contemporary Music Festival

On Friday 13 October 2017, the 9th International Pharos Contemporary Music Festival will end its journey through the various world music traditions, in an eastern Mediterranean flair with the Lingua Franca Ensemble.

The Ensemble, comprising Michalis Cholevas (Yayli Tanbur, Tarhu, Ney), Giannis Koutis (Oud, Guitar), Michalis Kouloumis (Violin) and percussionist Ruven Ruppik (Riq, Darbuka, Frame Drums, Marimba) – all graduates of the Codarts University of the Arts in Rotterdam, circumnavigates on a musical wandering during which the rich eastern Mediterranean traditions and western music elements blend and compose colourful soundscapes. World Blend Café is a network meeting for the world music scene in the Netherlands and is organized about five times a year. To a showcase and dj, you can pitch your own plan or idea, and during the evening there is plenty of opportunity to network during the buffet or at the bar.

PAFOS 2017 European Capital of Culture

Lingua Franca Ensemble will appear on the Travelling Stage in the summer of 2017 in Pafos. The members of the ensemble carry with them their geographical and musical experiences on a musical quest, during which the traditions of the Eastern Mediterranean meet and create a visual landscape through music. The fresh sound of the tarhu – a fiddle developed only ten years ago – mixes with the intense and brilliant sound of the violin creating a unique blend. The language of commerce and diplomacy in Eastern Mediterranean, a mixture of Portuguese, Arabian , French, Italian, Turkish and Greek accompanies the sentimental musical wandering of the four musicians.

A journey during which the rich eastern Mediterreanean traditions and the western elements blend and compose a colourful soundscape. Let us wander along in a musical dialogue and expand our horizons in terms of music and emotions.

The distinguished musicians Michalis Kouloumis (violin, composition) and Efren Lopez (oud, baglama, fretless guitar, rabab, composition) invite us to the colourful world of maqam and Eastern Mediterranean music with a collective music workshop. The artists will be focusing on the playing style in Eastern Mediterranean music as developed in Classical music of Constantinople (Ottoman Classical music), Greek - Turkish Traditional music and the Contemporary Modal music compositions as well.

Michalis Kouloumis and Efren Lopez in a notable collaboration present some of their finest compositions such as "Return", "Lahtara", "Aralik" and "Hortus Deliciarum". Their music combines elements from Medieval music, Ottoman classical, Cypriot/Greek/Turkish traditional and other modal music cultures. With a variety of musical instruments (violin, oud, rabab, fretless guitar, hardy gardy and lute), they introduce us in a unique musical world, full of sounds and colours.

Lingua Franca Ensemble will present music from their upcoming debut album "Ephemera" and they will talk about modal music and the influence of it to their material.
