"Cyprus Elegies" - Michalis and Petros Kouloumis Quartet

For the first time, the world sensation Cyprus-born brothers, Michalis and Petros Kouloumis will tour in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Michalis, a highly-acclaimed violinist and Petros with his exceptional voice will showcase music from their homeland, Cyprus, as well as material from Michalis' debut album Soil mingled with rich and soulful improvisations (Taksims, Amanes).

Dine Doneff aka Costas Theodorou, a highly-regarded multi-instrument artist, with albums released on ECM label and many collaborations, Savina Yannatou among others, as well as the distinguished oud player Alexandros Papadimitrakis will complete the quartet. The quartet will also present original compositions from the long-awaited album Displaced Dreams which is due for release in March 2020.

Michalis Kouloumis will be leading a 2-day violin workshop @ FIDDLERS ON THE MOVE Festival.

For advanced violinists

The workshop will be focusing on Greek and Cypriot traditional music. Characteristics and techniques of the violin playing will be studied through hand-picked songs and instrumental pieces from the above repertoire: bow techniques, phrasing development, rhythm – groove, rhythmic beats (5/8, 7/8, 9/8, 9/4, 10/8, 11/8), ornaments (embellishments, motifs), basic maqams, score interpretation & playing with variations, intervals, microtones, various tunings, playing with Ison (drone), modal Improvisation (rhythmical and taksim).

Smyrneiko/Rebetiko concert with Cigdem Aslan

Smyrneiko/Rembetiko is the first refugee to arrive in Greece from Asia Minor(Turkey) when the population exchange in the early 1920s took place. Born out of hardship yet full of resilience and with a devil-may-care attitude, these are the ‘Blues of the Mediterranean’. Çiğdem Aslan brings this to life in song accompanied by Nikos Baimpas (kanun, santouri), Michalis Kouloumis (violin), Ant Romero (Percussion) and Colin Somervell.

Θεατρική παράσταση

Η Δημιουργική Ομάδα Πυρήνας σε συνεργασία με τον διεθνούς φήμης συνθέτη και πολυοργανίστα Efren Lopez Sanz παρουσιάζει για πρώτη φορά επί σκηνής το κυπριακό μεσαιωνικό κείμενο Τα Εκατόλ-λογια. Πρόκειται για ένα κείμενο γραμμένο στην κυπριακή διάλεκτο σε δεκαπεντασύλλαβο στίχο. Η παράσταση εξιστορεί τον έρωτα ενός νεαρού (Παιίν) για μια όμορφη γυναίκα (Λυερή), η οποία για να ενδώσει τελικά στον έρωτα του, τον παρακινεί σε μια σειρά από ιδιαίτερες δοκιμασίες με τελικό κατόρθωμα να μάθει και να της τραγουδήσει τα Εκατό Λόγια της Αγάπης. Στην παράσταση θα ακουστούν ζωντανά πρωτότυπες συνθέσεις, μεσαιωνικές και αναγεννησιακές μελωδίες αλλά και μουσική από τον Κώδικα του Τορίνο, του σπουδαίου αυτού χειρόγραφου που γράφτηκε στον τόπο μας την εποχή των Λουζινιάν.
