Monthly Workshops with Michalis Kouloumis @ Baumstrasse, Athens (GR)
The highly acclaimed violinist-educator Michalis Kouloumis invites us to a new series of workshops, The Makam music of the Eastern Mediterranean, in Baumstrasse, Athens. The participants will study classical compositions from the Ottoman court and the Arab world, traditional melodies from Asia Minor and Levante, tunes from the Aegean islands and Cyprus, as well as selected works by contemporary composers.
In parallel, they will explore the fascinating world of makams, while basic teaching tools will be rhythmical improvisation / taksim, listening of recordings and group practicing. One of the most important educational objectives of the workshop is the emergence of music as a live act; the empirical learning of music through the interaction within the group members.

Bowed strings: violin, viola, cello, Constantinople / Cretan lyra, yayli tanbur
Plucked strings: kanun, lute, saz, oud, lavta, contrabass, rabab, tanbur
Percussion: riq, bendir, Epirus def

The workshops will run on a monthly basis, Saturdays and Sundays, starting in November 2019 and ending in June 2020.

OTTOMAN CLASSICAL MUSIC
Monthly Workshops with Michalis Kouloumis @ Baumstrasse, Athens (GR)
Michalis Kouloumis returns to Athens for a new artistic collaboration with Baumstrasse. The distinguished violinist invites you to a series of music workshops on the Classical music of Constantinople, widely known as Ottoman Classical music.
The participants will study unique musical examples of Armenian, Turkish, Mevlevi Sufi, Jewish, Persian and Greek composers who lived in Constantinople between the 15th and the 20th century. In parallel, they will explore the fascinating world of makams, while basic teaching tools will be improvisation (taksim), analysis of recordings and group practicing.

MICHALIS KOULOUMIS @ LABYRINTH CYPRUS MUSICAL WORKSHOP
Labyrinth Cyprus Musical Workshop is opening its doors and is welcoming you to the world of traditional and modal music. Through the seminars and concerts which Labyrinth Cyprus Musical Workshop organize, the best musicians and teachers of the genre reveal to the students a world of traditions and cultures.
Three seminars (Ross Daly, Kelly Thoma, Michalis Kouloumis) will be held between 10 and 15 of April, 2018, in Nicosia, and a concert on the 13th of the same month. We look forward to welcome you and experience a unique musical week together!
Highly-acclaimed violinist Michalis Kouloumis will lead an open seminar focusing on the Modal Music of the Eastern Mediterranean with regards to the multi-faceted Art of the Violin. Michalis will shed light on the performance of traditional music from Cyprus, Asia Minor, Thrace, Aegean Sea (Cyclades, Dodecanese Islands, Lesvos) as well as from the classical music of Constantinople (Ottoman classical music).
Characteristics and Techniques of the violin playing will be studied through hand-picked songs and instrumental pieces from the above repertoire:

A basic level of sight reading is needed for the seminar.
